Bowler Pons Successfully Deploys SAVI, a Fully-Automated Security and Vehicle Interdiction System, at One of the World's Largest Military Bases

ANNAPOLIS, MD / ACCESSWIRE / November 21, 2024 / Bowler Pons, a leading provider of advanced security, autonomous, and artificial intelligence solutions, today announced the successful full operational deployment of the Situational Awareness and Vehicle Interdiction (SAVI) system at one of the world's largest military bases. This milestone marks the transition of groundbreaking LiDAR-driven base security from concept demonstration to full operational capability.

The DoD program lead overseeing the deployment for SAVI remarked, "As the Lead Engineer for physical security and access control systems at DoD installation perimeters, the successful deployment of the SAVI system instills confidence in our approach to access control points (ACPs). A defense-in-depth strategy starts at the perimeter, particularly at vehicular ACPs. The SAVI system, with its LiDAR-based components paired with advanced machine learning, offers cutting-edge vehicle detection and analytics that goes beyond legacy systems to prevent unauthorized access (UA) and enhance situational awareness."

As part of the deployment, Bowler Pons leveraged its proprietary Apollo4D software suite, integrating it with industrial control systems and non-lethal vehicle interdiction capabilities to create SAVI. The resulting comprehensive security solution offers superior accuracy and decision-making outcomes compared to traditional CCTV, vehicle presence sensors, and intrusion detection systems (IDS).

SAVI Offers:

1. A multi-sensor mesh network leveraging 3D LiDAR-based imaging and awareness processed by AI and Machine Learning;

2. Multidimensional information including location, speed, direction, and size of vehicles;

3. Force multiplication and optimization through accelerated and automated security event detection, notification, and response;

4. Environmental operating flexibility across diverse settings and security scenarios;

5. Integration with existing physical access control and video management systems;

6. Automated or manual interdiction or response activation capabilities;

7. Continuous tracking and accountability of vehicles and personnel across an entire protected area; and

8. Traffic flow monitoring and prediction for congestion reduction, safety, security, and improved manpower planning.

These features offer security personnel an "always active" security system and real-time composite understanding of all activities within and around designated protected areas.

"The deployment of LiDAR sensors and algorithms met our goal of providing a cost-efficient alternative to traditional access control point hardening. The Bowler Pons team delivered exceptional performance, start to finish. As we continue our evaluation, we've identified DoD ACP initiatives that could benefit from moving beyond legacy vehicle detection systems," added the DoD Lead Engineer.

The underlying technologies comprising SAVI underwent rigorous testing in diverse environments to ensure performance and adaptability. Locations included the Pacific Northwest, Mid-Atlantic, terrestrial perimeters, beachfronts, pedestrian and vehicle entry control points, and maritime waterside perimeters.

"The development of SAVI, made possible by a combination of internal R&D (IR&D) funds and DoD research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) funds, marks a historic achievement in Bowler Pons' evolution as a technology-focused small business," said Mark Holmes, co-founder of Bowler Pons. "In June 2024, the system passed operational verification testing and post-installation inspection, transitioning to full operational deployment. I'm proud of the considerable work the team put in to cross the prototype-to-deployment 'valley of death' that often claims defense acquisition innovations."

While SAVI has proven its worth in military applications, Holmes sees potential for wider adoption: "Our resulting integrated system of capabilities is not only tailored for defense customers but it can also be cost-effectively tailored for organizations with critical security needs. We see great potential for SAVI's core subsystems in sectors such as data centers, corporate campuses, educational institutions, manufacturing plants, power plants, oil and gas refineries, and maritime ports."
