A Convergence of Challenges: Addressing the Devastating Impact of Chronic Disease on Communities in Crisis

By: 3BL Media

Abbott, CARE, RTI discuss how noncommunicable diseases affect displaced populations – and a unique partnership in the Philippines to help.

SOURCE: Abbott

DESCRIPTION:

Today, the UN estimates that there are more than 82 million people displaced from their homes by conflict and other emergencies. And chronic diseases, also called noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease and diabetes, account for 3 of 4 deaths globally.

The convergence of these two issues, especially in the midst of a global pandemic, is an immense, but often overlooked, challenge affecting the globe's most vulnerable communities.

At the recent 10th Annual Building Resilience Through Private-Public Partnerships Conference hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, leaders from Abbott, CARE and RTI International discussed these growing issues, and shared insights and initial results from a unique partnership in the Philippines to better meet the needs of affected communities. Event speakers included:

  • Melissa Brotz, Vice President of Global Marketing & External Affairs, Abbott (moderator)

  • Gloria D. Steele, Chief Operating Officer, CARE

  • Dr. Rachel Nugent, Vice President, RTI International and Director, Center for Global Noncommunicable Diseases

  • Dr. Angela Wakhweya, Senior Director, Health Equity and Rights Team, CARE USA
