Shawn Anderson's Passion Leads 525 Cities to Clap for Volunteers "Going the Extra Mile"
Motivational Author and Speaker Continues to Build Inspiring Mission

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – October 3, 2022 – On November 1, over 525 cities from across the U.S. will proclaim Extra Mile Day…a day recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change in ourselves, families, organizations and communities when we “go the extra mile.” Growing from 23 cities in its inaugural 2009 year, Extra Mile Day participation grew to 528 cities making the 11/1/2021 declaration.

“Extra Mile Day” is the vision of the motivational author and speaker Shawn Anderson. The author of seven books, including “The Four Fibs” and “A Better Life: An Inspiring Story About Starting Over“, Anderson has dedicated his life to inspiring others to “go the extra mile” in chasing dreams and making a difference.

Initially spreading the “go the extra mile” message across the U.S. in 2009, Anderson used a symbolic 4,000-mile ocean-to-ocean solo bike ride. On the ride, the non-bicyclist created motivational events in 21 cities. At these events, Anderson interviewed over 200 people who had been recognized as going the extra mile in overcoming setback or who had risked everything in order to accomplish something extraordinary. After the ninety-day tour, Anderson personally gave away $10,000 to those people whose stories he found especially inspiring. He also captured many of these motivating stories in his book, “Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose.”

Since 2009, Extra Mile Day has continued to build enthusiastic momentum with mayors across the U.S. jumping on board to participate. With their declarations, mayors recognize the contribution of people in their communities who are “going the extra mile” in service and volunteerism to make a positive difference.

“With millions of people hoping for someone else to make their lives better…a boss, a spouse, a government program…the Extra Mile Day movement reminds us that the positive change we seek begins with the person in the mirror,” says Anderson. “When we sit around and wait for someone else to create the change we seek, we waste our breath, time and lives. And there is no better way to make a difference than volunteering for an organization that moves our hearts.”
