BSides Calgary hosts a major conference this Cybersecurity Awareness Month

By: IssueWire

Calgary, Alberta Oct 14, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, hundreds of cybersecurity experts and self-taught hackers are gathering in Calgary on October 20 and 21, 2022. They will put a Tesla Model S to the test to find out just how easy - or difficult - it is to exploit some of the most technologically advanced software out there.

Members of the media are invited to join BSides Calgary as it welcomes world-class speakers, researchers, consultants, and local hackers at this hybrid event. They will learn the latest trends and strategies in the fight against sophisticated attackers.

Participants will take part in sessions, workshops, and competitions.

  • Challengers will attempt to access the Tesla Model S remotely
  • An extensive, hands-on Internet of Things (IoT) Village will be featured, with offensive and defensive challenges
  • Courses in Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Operational Technology (OT)
  • A Capture the Flag (CTF) competition

"We are extremely happy to have the IoT Village and the real-world hacking challenge of the Tesla Model S. These challenges are crucial to understanding the security impacts and how cybersecurity is prevalent, and required, in the real world," states James Cairns, President, BSides Calgary Security Foundation. "We hope that the lessons learned will encourage critical, outside-the-box thinking, new interest in the profession of cybersecurity, as well as drive the security of cyber-physical devices forward."

Media and spectators will find the Tesla Model S outside Bow Valley College's North Campus, 345 6 Ave SE. It has been provided thanks to sponsoring SecuredNet Solutions.

"It is critical we all do our part to stay vigilant, learning about and understanding emerging cyber threats," says Steve Porter, SecuredNet Solutions. "We hope this Tesla Model S challenge will be a fun, visual experience illustrating safeguards, potential vulnerabilities, and the role of security professionals in the digital universe."
