AmeriCorps volunteers, in partnership with over thirty community agencies, will host the Garfield Giveaway, a community resource fair for unhoused individuals in Garfield Park. This event is the culmination of months of dedicated work by nine AmeriCorps volunteers, who collaborated with community agencies to identify the specific needs of the target population. Their research, using sociodemographic data, CHIP's Point-In-Time count, and interviews with frontline workers, revealed a disproportionate impact of homelessness on African American males in the Garfield Park area. As a result, the resource fair has been tailored to address the most critical needs of this community.
"AmeriCorps members are dedicated to serving their communities,” says Ebony Barney, AmeriCorp Indiana Program Manager, “and this resource fair is a shining example of that commitment. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with so many outstanding organizations to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need."
These resources are vital to the unhoused community to address the most pressing needs these individuals face. Access to medical and dental care, immunizations, and communicable disease testing allows participants to receive essential health services. Linkage to care specialists and translators allow participants to continue engaging these services after the fair and provide additional support and accessibility. Personal care services like haircuts along with hot meals, clothing items, hygiene kits, cellphones, etc., enhance the quality of life and offer dignity to those in need.
"The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis is proud to support this vital initiative,” says Jason Grisell, president and CEO of THFGI. “This resource fair directly aligns with our mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations. We believe that everyone deserves access to essential resources, and this event is a step towards making that a reality for our unhoused neighbors."
