Houston Student Grief Support: Certified School Chaplain Program Expands

In Houston, the National School Chaplaincy Association (NSCA) (405-831-3299) has expanded its full-time school chaplaincy services to provide holistic support and counsel to help students get through grief.

The organization's recent expansion is intended to help mitigate the rising levels of anxiety and depression amongst students, which have reached record highs in 2024. After two years of participation in the NSCA's school chaplaincy program, schools have reported improved inter-student relations, a more positive perspective on life, a greater sense of peace, and increased self-respect among students. Particularly for students experiencing periods of heightened emotional strife or grief, this type of counsel can provide essential support.

NSCA-certified chaplains are trained to provide unbiased one-on-one counsel to students, using techniques that help them feel safe and comfortable discussing their concerns or struggles. 73% of students in participating schools stated that they had confidence in their chaplain's ability to help them with anxiety or depression. This improvement in student mental and emotional health is directly correlated with a reduction in campus violence, drug and alcohol consumption, and disciplinary issues, adds the organization.

Childhood grief or bereavement has proven to have a significant effect on academic performance. As explained in a paper published by Educational Psychology in Practice, the social impact of bereavement and grief can lead to highly anxious emotional states and underachievement for students. By addressing mental wellness holistically, NSCA-certified chaplains can help grieving students return to emotional homeostasis and improve their overall academic performance.

Along with providing one-on-one counsel, NSCA-certified school chaplains strive to foster a greater sense of community on campuses by helping organize events and extracurricular groups.

Since its founding in 1990, the NSCA's international school chaplaincy program has been utilized by over 30,000 schools in 23 different countries, providing support for more than 27 million individuals. The organization's vision is "to equip schools and chaplains to serve the spiritual needs of PK-12 students, staff, and their families."

"Chaplaincy isn’t a new or experimental idea, it is a proven role shown to dissipate tension, resolve conflict, and bring hope," said one spokesperson for the organization. "Chaplains do not replace the role of licensed professional counselors. Every institution that employs chaplains also employs counselors; the roles complement each other and do not compete."
