The Story Behind This Scorching Hot Pepper

Strange Beginnings

The story of Dragon’s Breath began as a collaboration between NPK Technology and renowned chili farmer Neal Price, along with Nottingham Trent University. Interestingly, the plant was developed in an effort to create special plant food and for extracting essential oils that could potentially yield a topical anesthetic.

An Accidental Surprise

Building upon the original works of NPK, Price, and Nottingham Trent University, the plant was later cultivated by breeder Mike Smith of St Asaph, Wales. To Smith’s surprise, the plant he cultivated as a more ‘attractive’ pepper plant yielded an undeniable heat when touched or consumed.

It was from this breeder’s nationality (Welsh) from which the pepper plant thereafter became known as Dragon’s Breath, after the Welsh dragon. A name that was and is entirely befitting of how hot this pepper really is.

Entering the fray, Magic Plant Farms’ vision of Dragon’s Breath is to become a household name as the hottest pepper known to man. However, upon receipt of the plant’s seeds, it became apparent that there was much improvement to be had on the landrace before it would become stable enough for commercialization.

By 2020, Magic Plant Farms had come up with the first stable landrace for Dragon’s Breath. However, the team’s botanists note that more work is necessary to further maximize its heat potential and other properties, citing that the process may take another five years before reaching its peak potential.

Is Dragon’s Breath Really the Hottest Pepper on Earth?

Despite the rumors that abound online, the application of Dragon’s Breath to the Guinness World Records is still awaiting confirmation on whether it truly is the world’s hottest pepper. Hottest or not, there’s no denying that Dragon’s Breath ranks among the likes of the Carolina Reaper on the Scoville scale.

2022 Crop Tested at 1.6 Million Scoville Units

The 2022 Dragon’s Breath chili crop from Magic Plant Farms was tested at an impressive 1.6 million Scoville units, putting it in the running for the hottest chili pepper in the world. But things are just starting to ‘heat up’ for this pepper, with the farm expecting that landrace improvements in future crops will produce a yield testing even higher.
