Spine Health Awareness Month Focuses on 'Back Attack' Prevention

By: PRLog

MESA, Ariz. - Sept. 27, 2023 - PRLog -- As Halloween approaches neighborhoods are decorated with spooky skeletons. The plastic remains evoke fear and laughter, but to the estimated 699 million individuals who suffer from lower back pain, it can be a painful reminder to take care of their aching backs.

October is Spine Health Awareness Month and health practitioners across the globe are promoting spine health and addressing misconceptions about spine health and injury prevention. One myth many LBP sufferers don't understand is their discomfort is often a weakness of the muscles surrounding the spine rather than the spine itself. Another common misnomer is bed rest should be the mainstay of therapy.

According to an article in Scientific America, bed rest causes rapid deconditioning which can make a person more susceptible to developing a chronic problem. Scientific research demonstrates that those who remain at least somewhat active after an injury do better than those who rest in bed.

Dr. B. Jeffrey Jolley, D.C., D.A.C.N.B, a chiropractor who serves as the clinic director and is also responsible for the development and implementation of the center's treatment and rehabilitation of spinal disorders at The Center for Total Back Care, 2220 S. Country Club, Suite 102 in Mesa, agrees with the research outlined in the article.

"Evidence shows that 80% of chronic spinal pain is due to muscle weakness, which increases as damage to the spine worsens," said Dr. Jolley. "A strong healthy spine provides a strong foundation which helps prevent spinal compression and allows you to perform your normal daily activities and demands of employment pain free."

The foundation of The Center for Total Back Care is the MedX lumbar and cervical extension machines to treat acute and chronic neck and low back pain. The state-of-the-art equipment uses a unique method of stabilizing the pelvis, providing true isolation of the deep muscles of the lumbar spine (erector spinae and multifidus). Weakness in these muscle groups have been associated with chronic low back pain and susceptibility to future back injuries, pain and disability.

"Only a handful of clinics in the Valley offer MedX lumbar and cervical medical evaluation and treatment. When I learned how beneficial MedX would be for my patients, I knew we had to incorporate it into our practice," said Dr. Jolley, who has been a licensed chiropractor for 40 years.

To bring more awareness to relieving back pain during Spine Health Awareness Month the center will offer a free consultation, free computerized MedX back or neck strength testing, as well as a copy of the 7 Myths about Back Pain.

The practice is located at 2220 S. Country Club, Suite 102 in Mesa near Baseline and Country Club roads. For more information or to book an appointment visit totalback.com or call 480-633-8293.
