World-Renowned Furniture Business, Charles Jacobsen Inc., to Close

For over 40 years, Charles Jacobsen Inc. has been a fixture in Los Angeles as a leading importer of Asian antiques. Known for its curated pieces, the company has enriched interiors across the U.S., from luxury hotels like the Wynn and Venetian in Las Vegas to celebrity homes such as those of Cher and Michael Bay. The company’s work has been featured in prominent publications including Architectural Digest and House Beautiful.

Charles Jacobsen founded the business in 1982, and in 2004, Michael Mirch joined as a partner. Michael took over the company in 2013, continuing the legacy of his mentor and friend. Despite initial hopes for a thriving future, recent challenges proved insurmountable. Economic pressures such as the COVID-19 pandemic, film industry strikes, rising rents, and shifting consumer behavior dramatically impacted the business.

Michael explained, “In the past, clients sought unique, high-quality pieces—even waiting months for custom work. Now, the convenience of ordering reproductions online has changed the industry. Platforms like Amazon and Wayfair prioritize immediacy over craftsmanship.”

The shift in consumer habits also affected foot traffic. “When I started in 2004, walk-in clients were common. Today, it’s hard to convey the beauty and scale of our collection through online catalogs,” Michael noted. “It’s not just us—this is a trend across retail. With reluctance but gratitude, we’ve decided this is the right time to exit.”

Despite the bittersweet closure, Michael expressed pride in the company’s achievements and appreciation for its loyal customers. “This is a sad time, but we want to celebrate the friendships and memories we’ve made over the years.”

In the coming weeks, Charles Jacobsen Inc. will hold a closing sale at their Fashion District location. Traditionally a destination for designers, the store is now open to the public with extended hours and store-closing prices.

Michael, his husband and business partner Mark, and the entire team invite their customers and friends to visit one final time.
