Rosenblum Law Opens Media Hotline to Address New York DMV's Point System Overhaul

Rosenblum Law, a leader in traffic ticket defense, has launched a dedicated media hotline to help reporters unpack the sweeping changes made by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to its point system for traffic violations. These changes, which went into effect on November 6, 2024, mark one of the most significant shifts in decades and carry serious implications for New York drivers.

Key updates to the DMV point system include:

  • Extended Point "Look Back" Period: The timeframe for accumulating points has increased from 18 to 24 months, increasing the risk of license suspensions.
  • New Points for Zero-Point Offenses: Violations that previously did not carry points now have serious implications:
    • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (AUO): Now carries 11 points.
    • Alcohol and Drug-Related Offenses (DWI, DWAI): Now carry 11 points.
    • Speed Contests or Races: Now carry 5 points.
  • Increased Points for Major Offenses:
    • Passing a Stopped School Bus: Increased from 5 to 8 points.
    • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash: Increased from 3 to 5 points.
    • Failure to Use Due Care (e.g., hitting a pedestrian, cyclist, or animal): Increased from 2 to 5 points.
    • Construction Zone Speeding Violations: Points for speeding in construction zones have been doubled.
  • Hearings for Repeat Offenders: Repeat offenders can face a suspension hearing even if they are under the 11-point threshold for administrative suspension.
  • Mandatory Driver Improvement Clinics: Drivers who accumulate 7+ within 24 months are now required to attend a DMV safety clinic.

“These new regulations will have a profound impact on drivers statewide,” said Adam Rosenblum, founding attorney of TrafficTickets.com and Rosenblum Law. “Our hotline is here to ensure journalists have the information and context needed to inform the public about these critical changes.”

Media Hotline Information:

The hotline provides access to Rosenblum Law’s experienced legal team, who can offer insights, analysis, and quotes for stories on the DMV changes. Adam Rosenblum is also available for interviews to discuss the implications of these updates and provide actionable advice for drivers.
