What's Up Down There? Dr. Streicher Explains Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)

From misbehaving bladders to genital dryness, Dr. Streicher breaks down GSM in the latest episode of Dr. Streicher’s Inside Information: THE Menopause Podcast, sponsored by Replens.

Dr. Lauren Streicher, a leading gynecologist and menopause expert, addresses the widespread issue of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in her latest podcast episode. Sponsored by Replens™, this episode provides an in-depth look at how hormonal changes during menopause impact women's vaginal and urinary health, while examining solutions to the uncomfortable symptoms of GSM, also known as vaginal atrophy.

Approximately 80% of women in mid-life and beyond experience GSM, which can result in painful vaginal dryness, urinary problems, and discomfort during sex, as well as other genital issues like itching and burning. While a prevalent issue, fewer than 10% of these women seek proper treatment. In this episode, Dr. Streicher explains that unlike Viagra for men, treatments for GSM are often under-prescribed and lack public awareness, despite being highly effective.

“For every man who suffers from erectile dysfunction, there is a woman who suffers from vaginal atrophy. Women with vaginal atrophy have vaginal walls that are so thin and dry that intercourse is either excruciatingly painful or impossible,” says Dr. Streicher. “Despite the fact that there are a ridiculous number of safe and effective products that will help women, most women are still told that the inability to have sex is a normal part of aging.”

The symptoms and solutions for GSM are not one-size-fits-all. While some may not experience any symptoms, most will encounter at least one. These symptoms often don't appear immediately but can develop years after perimenopause or menopause, leading many women to mistakenly attribute them to aging.

The episode explores various treatment options, including vaginal lubricants such as Replens Silky Smooth Personal Lubricant, vaginal moisturizers such as Replens Long-Lasting Vaginal Moisturizer, and prescription therapies like vaginal estrogen.

Dr. Streicher emphasizes that GSM is a fixable issue, and it's never too late to seek treatment. She encourages women to take control of their health, talk to their doctors, and explore the many solutions available to alleviate GSM symptoms.
