American Water Continues its Commitment to the Camden, NJ Community

Company Publishes its Community Investment Report and Celebrates Five Years on the Camden Waterfront

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., released its annual Camden Community Investment Report for 2023. This report demonstrates American Water's continued commitment to cultivating and maintaining meaningful and impactful relationships with Camden residents, stakeholders, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

"American Water is proud to be part of all the great progress happening in Camden," said M. Susan Hardwick, president and chief executive officer, American Water. "Since moving to Camden in 2018, we've been purposefully working on expanding our collaboration with community businesses and organizations ensuring we are an impactful corporate citizen helping the residents, families and students in this wonderful city."

In 2023, American Water, New Jersey American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation donated over $1.5 million to various organizations across the city. Some of the highlights in the report include:

  • $950,000 in Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit Program (NRTC) funding awarded by New Jersey American Water to three Camden-based organizations supporting economic development, housing and homeownership programs, and social services.
  • American Charitable Foundation, in collaboration with New Jersey American Water, awarded $250,000 through the Foundation’s Water and Environment Grant Program to Upstream Alliance, supporting a Solar-Electric Education Vessel to conduct on-water learning for Camden students.
  • American Water Charitable Foundation provided a combined total of $25,000 in One Water Street grants to five of American Water’s long-standing Camden community partners.
  • New Jersey American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation partnered with the Camden City School District to install reusable bottle filling stations in school cafeterias.

Employees were excited to give back to the communities where they live and work, lending a helping hand, sharing their experience and expertise in various ways and committing more than 500 volunteer hours throughout Camden in 2023. Additionally, American Water employees engaged with residents and other stakeholders in nearly 50 community and workforce development events. Events included hosting a National STEM Day workshop at Eastside High School, volunteer projects during the company’s AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service in September, and keeping people hydrated at numerous Camden Strong Community Cleanups as well as other events throughout Camden with the H2O on the Go water van.
