The Everest Foundation: Scholar Performs Outstanding Research

Los Angeles, California, United States - 10-26-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

The Everest Foundation Scholar and Research Fellow Dr. Archana Ramalingam of Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, West Virginia, has completed outstanding research on using art therapy in a medicinal setting.

The research, carried out jointly by Dr. Ramalingam and Dr. Nayiri Derian, brings together and analyzes the various studies that have been hitherto performed on the relationship between art therapy and the health of different patient populations.

The research takes a holistic look at how different types of artistic and creative activities can have a positive impact on patient outcomes. The paper, published in the International Journal of Healthcare Sciences, analyzes the available literature on the intervention of artistic activities as part of therapy in non-psychiatric healthcare settings.

Although the researchers note that more studies are required to reach any definitive conclusion on the subject, the comprehensive and extensive research and scrutiny performed on all literature on the topic suggests that art can indeed play a healing role among various patient populations.

This includes people in different medicinal settings, including patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers.

Some of the crucial studies mentioned in the paper include Dr. Roger Ulrich's landmark study, published in 1984, on how gallbladder surgery patients placed in hospital rooms with large windows with a view of trees recovered sooner than patients staying at rooms with views of brick walls.

The 1992 study by Dr. Miller et al. discussed how videos of landscapes shown to burn victims during dressing changes helped reduce the patient's pain levels.

Dr. Diette's 2003 study on how nature-themed murals placed on the bedside of patients undergoing bronchoscopy accounted for reduced pain levels and many more examples of art therapy.

The paper also notes how studies like these have played a significant role in many healthcare institutions (such as UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay) incorporating art into their building design and architecture.

Another critical aspect of the paper is that it discusses in detail various studies that have touched on how different artistic activities can act as a form of comprehensive medicine for patients with chronic diseases.

For example, the paper analyzes the cohort study performed at the University of Florida on art therapy's effects, including activities like clay molding, crocheting, playing musical instruments, drawing, Mandala art therapy, craft, poetry, etc., on dialysis patients.

The Everest Foundation Scholars Program

While congratulating Dr. Ramalingam on her outstanding research, Mrs. Agata Everest, the President, and CEO of The Everest Foundation, commented on how The Everest Foundation Scholars Program acts as a cornerstone of the organization's mission to improve the state of Graduate Medical Education (GME) in the country.

The program does this by increasing opportunities for medical research at several top teaching hospitals and medical schools in the U.S.

She remarked that the non-profit organization utilizes a rigorous selection process to single out appropriate candidates who can be considered for The Everest Foundation Scholarship.

And this is why many of the foundation’s scholars, such as Dr. Ramalingam, have been responsible for many paradigm-shifting medical research works in the country.

She further mentions that the foundation’s scholars, who come from many different countries, also contribute to The Everest Foundation's commitment to serving the many vulnerable and underserved populations and communities in the United States by going on to work among rural and vulnerable populations once they complete their fellowships and residencies.

Agata Everest is the wife of Dr. Michael Everest and daughter-in-law of the late Dr. Edwin A.D. Everest. With her husband, she plays an essential role in carrying forward the legacy of Dr. Edwin A.D. Everest through overseeing the day-to-day operations of The Everest Foundation and her role as the chief policy supervisor of the organization.
